Southern Railway conducts trial run of AC suburban train on Chennai-Arakkonam section

The Chennai-Arakkonam suburban train route is set to introduce its first air-conditioned (AC) coach services this summer, marking a significant improvement in commuter comfort and convenience on this busy corridor. Southern Railway recently conducted a test run of an AC electric multiple unit (EMU) train between the railway shed in Avadi and Arakkonam railway station, signaling the near commencement of these upgraded services.

This move follows the successful launch of the first air-conditioned suburban train service on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu section, which began operating in April 2025. The introduction of AC coaches on the Chennai-Arakkonam route had initially been planned for January 2026, ahead of the summer season. However, some delays pushed back the launch, but railway officials have assured that the service will begin soon.

The test run was a pioneering effort, as it was the first time an air-conditioned EMU was trialed on this particular section. The decision to implement air-conditioned services here was strongly influenced by feedback from local commuters. Traders, office workers, and senior citizens in the region had requested enhanced travel comfort, especially after witnessing the benefits of the AC trains running on the Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu line. The positive response and growing demand for such services highlighted the need for similar upgrades on the Chennai-Arakkonam route.

S. Ethiraj, president of the Arakkonam All Traders Association, expressed optimism about the new service, emphasizing the heavy reliance of commuters on rail connectivity to reach Chennai efficiently. He believes that the AC suburban trains will attract substantial patronage, given the large daily influx of passengers who travel between these points.

The upcoming AC suburban train service will feature 12 coaches and is expected to operate primarily during rush hours to accommodate the high volume of passengers. The service will mirror the existing “Arakkonam fast” local train, which runs with limited stops at major stations including Basin Bridge, Perambur, Ambattur, Avadi, Tiruvallur, and finally Arakkonam. This fast service significantly reduces travel time compared to regular locals on this route.

Currently, suburban trains on this section take approximately three hours to cover the distance between Chennai and Arakkonam, which is about 80 kilometers. However, the fast local train variant manages to complete the journey in just two hours, making it a preferred option for many commuters. The new AC trains will maintain this faster schedule, providing a quicker and more comfortable journey.

In terms of technical specifications, the minimum speed limit for the air-conditioned train will be 90 kilometers per hour, with the capability to reach up to 110 kilometers per hour on the route. The recent test run conducted by Southern Railway was comprehensive, focusing not only on speed but also on track stability, signaling coordination, and overall safety to ensure smooth operations once the service is officially launched.

Currently, the railway infrastructure at Arakkonam station comprises only two tracks, which serve both express and suburban trains. The station handles a substantial number of trains daily, with over 120 express trains passing through alongside the local services. To accommodate future growth and improve handling capacity, Southern Railway has recently made provisions to expand the track infrastructure. They have created an additional nine meters of space adjacent to the existing tracks, intended for laying at least two new tracks. This expansion will facilitate the operation of more express trains and help manage the growing passenger demand more efficiently.

The introduction of air-conditioned suburban trains on the Chennai-Arakkonam route is a significant step forward in enhancing the suburban rail experience for thousands of daily commuters. It reflects the Southern Railway’s commitment to modernizing its services and responding to commuter needs by providing faster, safer, and more comfortable travel options. As the summer season approaches, passengers can look forward to cooler, air-conditioned journeys that reduce travel fatigue and improve the overall quality of suburban travel in the region.

In summary, the upcoming launch of air-conditioned suburban train services on the Chennai-Arakkonam section represents a major upgrade in the local rail network. Following the successful implementation of similar trains on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu line, this new service aims to cater to the high demand from daily commuters, particularly traders, office workers, and seniors. The 12-coach AC trains will run during peak hours, offering faster travel times of around two hours over the 80-kilometer stretch, thanks to limited stops and higher speed limits of up to 110 km/h.
