Amazon Health AI brings a doctor to your pocket

Navigating the healthcare system is a challenge many people face daily. Whether it’s waiting weeks for an appointment, trying to decipher medical records, or dealing with the confusing maze of insurance rules, the experience often leaves patients feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. On top of that, when you start to experience symptoms and turn to the internet for answers, you may find yourself spiraling into worst-case scenarios or becoming more confused than reassured. Recognizing these challenges, Amazon has introduced a new digital health assistant called Amazon Health AI, designed to make healthcare simpler, more accessible, and more personalized.

Amazon Health AI is a tool integrated directly into the Amazon app and website, available at amazon.com/health-ai. It allows users to type in health-related questions and receive immediate guidance. The system acts as an intelligent chat assistant that can help explain symptoms, interpret lab results, review medical records, and even connect users with healthcare providers when professional care is needed. This seamless integration aims to reduce the time and effort involved in finding appropriate care, eliminating the need to juggle multiple apps, websites, or phone calls.

One of the standout features of Amazon Health AI is its connection to Amazon One Medical, a healthcare provider network available in many parts of the U.S. When a user’s symptoms suggest they require professional attention, the AI can facilitate direct communication with clinicians. This includes messaging a provider, starting a video consultation, or scheduling an in-person appointment. The system even has safety measures in place to recommend emergency services if symptoms indicate a potentially serious condition, such as advising users to call 911.

The rollout of Amazon Health AI is currently gradual, with availability varying by location across the United States. Andrew Diamond, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer at Amazon One Medical, emphasized that the tool aims to ease the common frustrations patients face, such as feeling rushed during doctor visits or overwhelmed by healthcare logistics. “Nearly two-thirds of Americans feel overwhelmed by the healthcare system and wish their doctors had more time to understand their concerns,” Diamond said. “Health AI is designed to handle the logistical and informational work that creates friction in healthcare so patients and providers can spend more time on what matters most: the human relationship at the heart of healing.”

A key to the AI’s usefulness lies in its ability to access and understand a user’s medical history, but only with explicit permission. Through a secure national network known as the Health Information Exchange, Health AI can retrieve medical records from hundreds of thousands of providers nationwide. This allows it to offer more tailored advice. For example, if someone with asthma develops a cough during flu season, the AI won’t treat the symptom generically. Instead, it will consider the user’s asthma history and ask more specific follow-up questions to provide relevant guidance. While the AI can offer general advice about health questions unrelated to the account holder’s history, personalized responses require access to the individual’s medical data.

Despite its capabilities, Health AI is not intended to replace doctors. When situations demand professional medical judgment, the system automatically connects users with real healthcare providers. This hybrid approach combines the speed and convenience of AI with the expertise and empathy of human clinicians.

The service also streamlines other aspects of healthcare management. For instance, prescription renewals can be requested through the system, which are then reviewed and approved by One Medical providers. Prescriptions can be filled via Amazon Pharmacy or at a user’s preferred pharmacy, reducing the hassle of multiple steps and prolonged wait times. Additionally, Amazon offers an introductory benefit for eligible Amazon Prime members, allowing them up to five free message-based consultations with a One Medical provider for any of 30 common conditions ranging from sinus infections to urinary tract infections. Outside this promotion, messaging or telehealth visits typically cost about $29, and full One Medical memberships offer broader virtual care options at discounted rates for Prime members.

Given the sensitive nature of health information, privacy and security are major concerns. Amazon assures users that Health AI operates within a HIPAA-compliant environment, employing strong encryption and strict access controls. The company states that personal health data is not used for advertising purposes and is never sold to third parties. Similarly, protected health information from One Medical and Amazon Pharmacy is kept confidential. The system is designed with multiple safety guardrails; if the AI cannot confidently answer a question, it will refer the user to a human provider. The underlying technology runs on Amazon’s AI platform, Amazon Bedrock, which supports the system’s reliability and security.

Importantly, Amazon emphasizes that
