Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland dies at age of 24

Marshawn Kneeland, a promising young defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, tragically passed away at the age of 24, the team announced on Thursday. The news sent shockwaves through the football community, as Kneeland was just beginning to make his mark in the NFL. The Cowboys released a statement expressing their profound sadness and extending their thoughts and prayers to Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina, and his family during this difficult time.

According to the Frisco Police Department, authorities believe Kneeland took his own life following a distressing sequence of events on Wednesday night. The incident began with a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash on southbound Dallas Parkway. Kneeland fled the scene on foot, prompting a multi-agency search. He was ultimately located at 1:31 a.m. early Thursday morning. The Collin County medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause and manner of death.

Jonathan Perzley, Kneeland’s agent and close friend, shared a heartfelt tribute to the young athlete. “I am shattered to confirm that my client and dearest friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” Perzley said. He recalled watching Kneeland’s journey from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan University with a dream of playing professional football, to becoming a respected member of the Dallas Cowboys roster. “Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice, and every moment on the field,” Perzley added. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of someone with Kneeland’s talent, spirit, and kindness, extending his condolences to Kneeland’s family, teammates, and everyone who loved him. Perzley also hoped the football community would rally around those affected during this unimaginable time.

Kneeland’s college coach at Western Michigan, Lance Taylor, also offered a moving statement. He described Kneeland as much more than a gifted football player, emphasizing the young man’s leadership, energy, and infectious smile. “He left a lasting impact on everyone in our program,” Taylor said. Having coached Kneeland during his first season at Western Michigan, Taylor developed a special bond with him that went beyond the football field. “His passion for life and his teammates were unmatched,” Taylor continued. The entire Bronco Football family is devastated by the loss and sends their deepest prayers to Kneeland’s loved ones. Taylor concluded by affirming that Kneeland would forever remain a part of the Bronco brotherhood.

Marshawn Kneeland’s path to the NFL was marked by determination and resilience. The Dallas Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, picking him out of Western Michigan. His journey was not without personal hardship. Just before the draft, Kneeland’s mother, Wendy, passed away, a loss that deeply affected him. Reflecting on that difficult time, Kneeland once said, “It was definitely tough. I just managed it. She helped me a lot in my younger years getting into football. I always had the dream. I always told her, ‘I’m going to the NFL’ and I made it.”

Kneeland played in 11 games during his rookie season, steadily earning more playing time and responsibility. In the 2025 season, he was beginning to take on a more prominent role on the Cowboys’ defense. Just days before his death, on Monday, Kneeland scored his first career touchdown by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone during a game against the Arizona Cardinals, a rare and exciting achievement for a defensive lineman. Though the Cowboys lost the game, Kneeland’s touchdown was a bright moment in his burgeoning career.

The NFL issued a statement expressing deep sadness over Kneeland’s passing and confirmed that they have been in contact with the Cowboys, offering support and counseling resources to the team and those affected. This tragedy adds to the history of loss the Cowboys organization has endured. In 2012, the team suffered the death of linebacker Jerry Brown, who was killed in a car accident involving his teammate Josh Brent.

Kneeland’s death highlights the ongoing mental health challenges that athletes and individuals face, often hidden behind public success and athletic prowess. The NFL and teams across the league have increasingly recognized the importance of providing mental health resources to players, staff, and families to address these issues proactively.

For those struggling with thoughts of suicide or in need of support, numerous helplines and resources are available globally. In the United States, individuals can call or text the National Suicide Prevention
