Reality TV star Steven McBee Sr. sentenced to federal prison for multimillion-dollar fraud scheme

**Steve McBee, Reality TV Rancher, Sentenced to Prison for Crop Insurance Fraud**

Steve McBee Sr., the star of the reality television series "The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys," has been sentenced to two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a multimillion-dollar crop insurance fraud scheme. The sentencing took place on Thursday, October 16, and marks a significant turn in the life of a man who has recently gained national attention as the patriarch of a family-run farm and cattle business showcased on reality TV.

### The Sentencing and Its Details

Federal court documents reveal that McBee, aged 52, was not only sentenced to two years behind bars but will also serve an additional two years of supervised release following his prison term. As part of his punishment, he has been ordered to pay restitution amounting to $4,022,124 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency. Furthermore, McBee must forfeit all property and assets obtained through the proceeds of his fraudulent actions. This includes several luxury items such as three high-end watches—a Tag Heuer Formula 1, a Tag Heuer Grand Carrera, and a Rolex Daytona—which have been returned to the authorities as part of the restitution process.

McBee has until 2 p.m. on December 1, 2025, to surrender himself to the Federal Prison Camp in Yankton, South Dakota, where he will begin serving his sentence.

### The Fraud Scheme: How It Worked

The charges against McBee stem from fraudulent activities he engaged in between 2018 and 2020. According to the Department of Justice, McBee admitted to submitting false documents for federal crop insurance programs. Specifically, he drastically underreported his crop yields—understating his 2018 corn crop by approximately 674,812 bushels and his soybean crop by about 155,833 bushels. By making it appear as though his harvests had suffered significant losses, McBee was able to claim $2,605,943 in insurance benefits he was not entitled to, along with $552,980 in premium subsidies. Altogether, his fraudulent claims amounted to more than $3.1 million.

The Department of Justice press release made clear that McBee's actions caused substantial economic losses to the USDA, which is responsible for overseeing and administering federal crop insurance programs designed to protect farmers from the financial impact of natural disasters and crop failures. These programs rely on honest reporting from participants, and fraud undermines their integrity and viability.

### Facing the Consequences

Prior to the formal sentencing, McBee was facing up to 30 years in federal prison for his crimes. Federal prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 41 months (just under three and a half years) in prison, along with three years of supervised release. Ultimately, the judge imposed a slightly shorter prison term but maintained the requirement for two years of supervision after McBee's release.

Following the sentencing, McBee took to social media to share his feelings and gratitude. In an Instagram story, he thanked his followers and supporters for their messages of encouragement, noting that the emotional support he received had touched him deeply. He posted a screenshot of a text message from a friend who said they were praying for him and would be there if he needed anything.

"The number of messages I have received touches my heart beyond measure that words could express," McBee wrote. He went on to reflect on his good fortune to have spent time with "so many high character young people," crediting them with making him a better person. He also expressed appreciation for his family and the support system surrounding him, concluding with a message of hope: "This too shall pass..."

### Impact on McBee and His Family

The sentencing comes at a time when McBee and his family have become minor celebrities thanks to their reality TV show. "The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys" premiered in 2024, first on Peacock and the USA Network, and was later picked up by Bravo for its second season. The show documents the day-to-day operations of McBee Farm & Cattle Co., a family-owned farm and cattle ranch. It focuses on the challenges and triumphs of running a large agricultural business while dealing with the typical family dynamics that come with such an enterprise.

Despite the legal troubles facing its leading man, the show’s popularity continues to grow. In fact, just a day before McBee’s sentencing, Bravo announced that the
