NBA commissioner says he’s ‘deeply disturbed’ by gambling case involving Billups and Rozier

The recent arrests of NBA figures Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier on gambling-related charges have sent shockwaves throughout the league, prompting strong reactions from players, coaches, and league officials alike. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the situation publicly for the first time on Friday night, expressing his deep concern and emphasizing the paramount importance of maintaining the league’s integrity.

Silver revealed that upon learning of the indictments, which also involved nearly three dozen other individuals, including former NBA player Damon Jones, he was “deeply disturbed” and experienced “a pit in [his] stomach.” Speaking during Amazon Prime Video’s broadcast of the Boston Celtics at New York Knicks game, Silver highlighted that nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of competition. He acknowledged the unsettling nature of the charges and apologized to fans for the distraction they have caused during the league’s opening week.

The federal indictments unveiled on Thursday led to the arrest of Billups and Rozier, among others. Rozier faces allegations that he conspired with associates to place bets based on his own statistical performance in games, a practice known as “prop betting.” This case has been under scrutiny since March 2023 when legal sportsbooks observed irregular betting patterns linked to Rozier’s performance in a game while he was with the Charlotte Hornets. Specifically, Rozier played about nine and a half minutes in that game, and those who wagered that he would underperform certain statistical benchmarks won their bets. More than $200,000 was reportedly wagered on these lines alone.

Despite the suspicious betting activity, the NBA’s internal investigation at that time found no grounds to sanction Rozier. Silver explained that Rozier had cooperated fully with the league’s inquiry, providing his phone and participating in an interview. Ultimately, the league concluded there was insufficient evidence to take action against him. However, Silver noted that Rozier has not been convicted of any wrongdoing. In light of the recent developments, Rozier has been placed on administrative leave, reflecting the league’s effort to balance protecting individual rights with conducting a thorough investigation.

Billups faces more severe allegations, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering linked to rigged poker games allegedly backed by Mafia interests. Federal officials also allege that Billups provided inside information about player health statuses to bettors, a serious breach of trust that undermines fair competition. He is identified as “Co-Conspirator 8” in an indictment detailing how certain individuals exploited confidential player health information to inform betting decisions. These revelations have cast a dark shadow over Billups’ reputation and the league as a whole.

The breadth of the scandal extends beyond just Billups and Rozier. Damon Jones, a former NBA player, is accused of tipping off bettors about the health status of two Los Angeles Lakers stars, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, before the information became public. Importantly, there is no suggestion that James or Davis were involved or aware of Jones’ actions. Nonetheless, the case illustrates how insider information can be weaponized to influence betting markets and compromise game integrity.

Reactions from within the NBA community have been heartfelt and somber. Tyronn Lue, head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and a close friend of Billups, described the news as difficult to process. Lue spoke with Billups shortly before the arrests and found some encouragement in their conversation, but acknowledged the strain the allegations have placed on Billups and his family. “To go through something like this, the allegations, his family, my goddaughters, it was a tough day,” Lue said. “You never want to see your friends go through anything like that.”

Veteran Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers, who has witnessed the league’s evolution over four decades, expressed sadness and disbelief. “It’s really sad,” Rivers remarked, underscoring the unprecedented nature of the scandal. The NBA community is grappling with the reality that gambling, now more integrated into sports than ever before, poses new and complex challenges that threaten the foundational fairness of the game.

Detroit Pistons coach JB Bickerstaff highlighted how the expanding presence of legal sports betting has introduced “very dangerous situations” from both a security and ethical standpoint. He emphasized the value that inside information holds for bettors and the risks it creates for everyone involved in professional basketball.

In response to these risks, the NBA mandates that all teams conduct annual educational sessions for players, coaches, and staff about
