Deng Majek, an asylum seeker from Sudan who claims to be 19 years old, is on trial for the murder of 27-year-old Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker in Walsall.
The incident occurred on 20 October 2024 at Bescot Stadium railway station, where prosecutors allege Majek stabbed Whyte 23 times with a screwdriver.
Whyte died three days later without regaining consciousness.
Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that Majek was seen on CCTV following Whyte from the hotel where both lived and worked to the railway station late at night.
The prosecution described the attack as "vicious and frenzied," and said Majek appeared "clearly excited about what he had done," dancing and laughing after the attack.
CCTV footage presented to the jury showed Majek staring at Whyte inside the Park Inn Hotel in Walsall before following her to the station after her shift ended at 23:00 BST.
The footage also captured him running from the scene and disposing of Whyte's mobile phone by throwing it into a river.
Evidence included Whyte's blood found on Majek's clothing and her DNA under his fingernails.
The prosecution stated that Majek had been living at the hotel, which houses asylum seekers, while Whyte had worked there for about three months, performing duties such as cleaning and serving food.
Colleagues reported no serious issues between Whyte and residents, aside from a minor incident involving broken biscuits.
The court heard that Whyte called a friend at 23:04, and the friend heard two screams before the call ended at 23:19.
CCTV showed Majek closing in on Whyte as she approached the deserted platform.
After the attack, Majek was seen purchasing a drink at a local shop before returning to the hotel.
The train Whyte was due to catch arrived at 23:24, and the driver found her slumped on the platform.
Attempts to save her life by the train guard and a hotel employee were unsuccessful.
Medical evidence revealed that 11 of the 23 stab wounds penetrated Whyte's skull, with one wound damaging her brain stem, which caused her death.
Additional injuries to her chest and arm suggested she tried to defend herself.
The wounds matched the shape of a cross-headed screwdriver, which has not been recovered.
Prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC emphasized that Majek left Whyte bleeding to death and then casually returned to the hotel, urging the jury to be sure of his guilt.
Majek denies the charge of murder.
The trial is expected to last about three weeks.
