Bill Gates says he will give away most of his fortune by 2045

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world's wealthiest individuals, has announced his intention to donate 99% of his fortune over the next two decades. This decision marks a significant acceleration in his philanthropic efforts, with plans for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to conclude its operations by 2045. Gates expressed his desire to ensure that his legacy is not defined by wealth, stating in a recent blog post, "People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that 'he died rich' will not be one of them." At 69 years old, Gates has already contributed $100 billion through his foundation towards global health and development initiatives. Over the next 20 years, he anticipates distributing another $200 billion, although this amount will be influenced by market conditions and inflation. This commitment reflects an increased pace of giving, as Gates and his former wife, Melinda, initially envisioned the foundation continuing its work for many more decades beyond their lifetimes. In his blog, Gates referenced Andrew Carnegie's 1889 essay "The Gospel of Wealth," which argues that the wealthy have a responsibility to redistribute their fortunes for the betterment of society. Gates echoed Carnegie's sentiment, quoting his assertion that "the man who dies thus rich dies disgraced." Despite his plans to give away nearly all his wealth, Gates could still remain a billionaire, as Bloomberg currently ranks him as the fifth-richest person globally with a net worth of $108 billion. Gates' philanthropic strategy involves drawing from the foundation's endowment to facilitate its charitable activities. Having co-founded Microsoft in 1975 alongside Paul Allen, Gates led the company to become a powerhouse in the tech industry. He has since gradually stepped back, resigning as CEO in 2000 and as chairman in 2014. His philanthropy has been partly inspired by other prominent philanthropists, such as Warren Buffett. However, his foundation has faced criticism for allegedly leveraging its charitable status to avoid taxes and exerting significant influence over global health policies. The Gates Foundation is focused on three main objectives: eradicating diseases that cause maternal and child mortality, eliminating infectious diseases like malaria and measles, and alleviating poverty for hundreds of millions worldwide. In his blog, Gates criticized countries such as the US, UK, and France for reducing their foreign aid budgets, highlighting his concern for the poorest populations. He stressed the foundation's commitment to supporting initiatives that help people and countries escape poverty, despite uncertainties about continued support from the world's wealthiest nations. Gates' criticism extended to a more pointed commentary in an interview with the Financial Times, where he accused Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and head of the US Department of Government Efficiency, of contributing to the deaths of children by slashing the US aid budget. Gates cited Musk's role in dismantling the US Agency for International Development as particularly detrimental. He depicted Musk's actions as those of "the world's richest man killing the world's poorest children," a stark portrayal of the consequences of such budget cuts. One specific issue raised by Gates involved the cancellation of grants to a hospital in Gaza Province, Mozambique, which had been erroneously accused by former President Donald Trump of funding condoms for Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Musk later admitted the claim was incorrect, yet the cost-cutting measures persisted. Gates expressed a desire for Musk to personally witness the impact of his financial decisions on children now infected with HIV due to reduced funding. The BBC reached out to Musk for a response to Gates' comments. Meanwhile, the Gates Foundation continues its philanthropic efforts, including being a donor to BBC Media Action, which is the charitable arm of the BBC, operating independently of its news division. Through these actions, Gates aims to fulfill his vision of giving back to society and addressing critical global issues, ensuring that his legacy is defined by generosity rather than wealth.
