60 years at Berkshire: See Warren Buffett's 'Woodstock for Capitalists' over the decades

Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meeting has evolved into a significant event over the past six decades. When Warren Buffett took control of the struggling Massachusetts textile company in 1965, the meeting was a modest gathering of about a dozen people. Today, it has transformed into a major event known as the "Woodstock for Capitalists," drawing up to 40,000 attendees from across the globe to Omaha, Nebraska.

The meeting, now held at the CHI Health Center, sees attendees lining up in the early hours to hear from the 94-year-old Warren Buffett, renowned for his investment wisdom and nicknamed the Oracle of Omaha. Besides discussing business strategies and investment insights, Buffett also shares advice on personal topics such as life and friendship. This year marks the second meeting since the passing of his close friend and business partner, Charlie Munger, in 2023. Greg Abel, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Energy and Buffett's chosen successor, will join Buffett on stage to address questions from shareholders. Ajit Jain, the Insurance Chief, will also participate in part of the question-and-answer session.

The annual meeting has expanded into a weekend of activities, including the "Berkshire Bazaar of Bargains," where products from the conglomerate's subsidiaries are showcased. Attendees can also participate in a 5-kilometer run and attend value investing conferences, making the weekend an engaging experience for investors. Christopher Bloomstran, president of Semper Augustus Investments Group and a veteran attendee for over two decades, describes the meeting as a "rite of passage" for new investors.

This year, Berkshire Hathaway is marking Buffett's 60-year tenure as CEO by selling 5,000 volumes of a limited edition book titled "60 Years of Berkshire Hathaway." Proceeds from the auction of copies signed by Buffett and author Carrie Sova will benefit the Stephen Center, a charity aiding homeless youth and adults in South Omaha.

The format of the meeting will differ from previous years, as noted in the 2024 shareholder letter. While Buffett will deliver opening remarks at 8 a.m. local time on Saturday, the traditional movie introduction has been omitted. The question-and-answer session will proceed with only a brief half-hour break and conclude at 1 p.m., though the shopping area will remain open until 4 p.m.

The event has been extensively covered by news outlets over the years, and this year, CNBC will be the exclusive broadcaster, with the webcast available in English and Mandarin. Despite the convenience of livestreaming, many regular attendees find the in-person experience in Omaha to be unique and special. Adam Mead, CEO of Mead Capital Management and author of "The Complete Financial History of Berkshire Hathaway," likens the experience to attending a church service, highlighting the camaraderie and magic that draw people back year after year.

As Berkshire Hathaway celebrates Warren Buffett's 60 years at the helm, CNBC has compiled memorable moments from past meetings to honor his leadership and the company's remarkable journey.
