Mexico's president says she rejected Trump's plan to send US troops across the border

In a recent statement, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump had proposed deploying American troops to Mexico to assist in combating drug trafficking. Sheinbaum, however, firmly rejected this proposal. Her comments were made during a gathering of supporters in eastern Mexico and came in response to a Wall Street Journal article that detailed a tense phone conversation between the two leaders. According to the article, Trump applied pressure on Sheinbaum to allow a more substantial role for the U.S. military in fighting drug cartels within Mexico. During her address, Sheinbaum recounted Trump's offer, saying, “How can we help you fight drug trafficking? I propose that the United States military come in and help you.” She made her position clear by responding, “No, President Trump.” She emphasized the importance of national sovereignty, declaring, “Sovereignty is not for sale. Sovereignty is loved and defended.” As of now, the White House has not issued a comment regarding Sheinbaum's statements. In recent months, the U.S. military has increased its presence along the southern border with Mexico. This action follows an order from President Trump in January to enhance the military's role in curbing migrant flows. The U.S. Northern Command has deployed more troops and equipment to the border, increased manned surveillance flights to monitor fentanyl trafficking, and sought expanded authority for U.S. Special Forces to collaborate with Mexican forces in operations against drug cartels. Furthermore, on February 19, Trump designated many gangs and cartels involved in drug smuggling as foreign terrorist organizations. This designation aims to restrict their activities and provide law enforcement with additional resources to combat them. Despite these efforts, Sheinbaum’s firm stance against unilateral military intervention suggests a potential conflict with the U.S. president.
